Traditions of the Polish capital market date back to 1817, where the first Merchant Stock Exchange was opened in Warsaw. The WSE commenced activities in its current legal form on 16th April 1991, organizing an electronic trading in securities system from the very beginning of its existence.

Tasks of the WSE include organization of trading in financial instruments. The WSE ensures concentration of buy and sell offers at one place and one time to set the price and perform the resulting transactions. The trading system implemented at the WSE is characterized by setting prices of individual financial instruments based on bid and ask prices, hence the market is considered to be an orders driven market. This means that a list of bid and ask orders is prepared to determine the price of the given instrument. Orders are associated with each other according to strictly defined rules, and transactions are closed during the stock exchange session. A function of market animator is available to improve liquidity of listed instruments, open to WSE members and other financial institutions; market animators place appropriate buy and sell orders for the given instrument on their own account (based on an appropriate agreement executed with the WSE).
The WSE trades in the following securities: shares, bonds, rights to shares, preemptive rights, certificate of investment and derivative instruments: futures, options, index units.

Sessions are held from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:35 p.m.
