The History of Diners Club

In 1949, three famous businessmen, Frank McNamara, Alfred Bloomingdale and Ralph Schneider, had dinner together in a Chicago restaurant. When the bill arrived, Frank McNamara discovered that he had forgotten his wallet. So, he decided to give his business card to the maitre and promised that he would pay the bill the next day.

This embarrassing situation gave birth to the idea of a card that would allow them to stop worrying about the amount of money they had in their wallet, since it would allow them to have credit for the cost of their dinner and pay for it later!
The name of the card, Diners Club, was also inspired by this event.

This revolutionary idea received a warm welcome by many other merchant service establishments. Soon, the card could be used for the payment of hotel bills, car rentals, travels and for the purchase of consumer goods.

Ten years later, in 1959, Diners Club card came to Greece giving its Greek members the possibility of discovering life through its exclusive benefits.
