Citi’s Proactive Reissue of Cards due to Potential Fraud

In recent weeks, Citi accelerated the delivery of new Chip and PIN cards to cardholders whose accounts were at risk for fraud due to merchant security breaches. This proactive distribution of cards was to prevent an impact to cardholders while traveling, given the high probability of fraud that could occur on their current cards.

Cardholders who received a new card should follow the instructions listed on the activation sticker located on the face of their new, Chip and PIN card. At this time, they will also be required to set a four-digit PIN. We will be contacting these cardholders to request that they complete their activation as soon as possible to avoid service disruption.

Additionally, Citi is separately communicating to a smaller population of cardholders whose existing, Chip and PIN cards were also compromised. Due to the high risk of third party fraud associated with their accounts, we are reaching out to these cardholders to facilitate the closing of their current card account and opening of a new one. This group of cardholders is being contacted by phone to discuss the best way to replace their old card. If we are unable to reach these cardholders by phone, we will send them a communication asking that they contact us. To help mitigate further risk to your cardholders, please see below for helpful tips that they can follow to help protect their accounts against security breaches:

  • Confirm that their contact information (email address and phone number(s)) is up-to-date in CitiManager so that we can contact them quickly, if required
  • Keep their cards in a secure place, not in the open
  • Never write down, record or share their PIN with others
  • Monitor account activity closely and contact us immediately if they notice any suspicious activity on their card accounts
