Top Online Bookstores
To come up with this list of winners, eMarketer did a search and price comparison on two popular books to compare prices, availability and delivery times. Then eMarketer rated each site by price, inventory, sense of community and download time on a scale of 1 to 5 — 1 being the highest score.

1 Amazon.com — With over 2.5 million titles, multiple reviews, original interviews with best-selling authors and a delivery system that's lightning fast, Amazon.com is your best bet.

Price: 2, Inventory: 2, Community: 2, Download: 1 - Total = 7

2 Tattered Cover Book Store — This brick-and-mortar Denver bookseller also sells its inventory online — about a half million new titles. Despite the huge inventory, the search engine zips along, earning Tattered Cover a download score of 2.

Price: 4, Inventory: 1, Community: 2, Download: 2 - Total = 9

3 Barnes&Noble — This site includes a nifty feature, Barnes&Noble Television, that lets you view bookvideos, so you can see and hear books come to life. Barnes&Noble.com also includes an extensive search feature, which may be the reason it's slow to download.

Price: 2, Inventory: 3, Community: 1, Download: 4 - Total = 10

4 Bibliofind — This site's not pretty, but it boasts of having 5 million books at 10 to 50 percent off. How can it have so many? By offering used and rare books from 1,750 booksellers. A good bet for unusual or out-of-print books.

Price: 3, Inventory: 2, Community: 4, Download: 2 - Total = 11

5 Booksite — Prices are 20 percent higher than Amazon. The total number of titles is not advertised, but the inventory appears to be extensive. Download time is fast.

Price: 3, Inventory: 2, Community: 4, Download: 2 - Total = 11

6 Harvard Bookstore — Of the sites with brick-and-mortar stores, Harvard is an attractive companion with photos of the store and a fast search engine. But the prices are not as low as one would expect at an online bookseller.

Price: 4, Inventory: 4, Community: 1, Download: 2 - Total = 11

7 Cody's Books — Straight from Berkeley, Calif., Cody's is one of the nation's largest independent booksellers, and believes that "independent bookstores are essential in the free distribution of ideas in our culture." The site has a great sense of community and fast download time.

Price: 3, Inventory: 5, Community: 2, Download: 2 - Total = 12

8 Powell's BookInternet World called this "the best search engine in the book business." And if you're searching for rare, technical or sale books, take a look. They have over one million new and used books, and will buy your books. On the negative side, prices are a bit steep.

Price: 4, Inventory: 4, Community: 3, Download: 2 - Total = 13
