Islamic Banking

Citi’s Islamic banking operation began in 1981 in London, and in 1996 Citi was the first international institution to set up a separately capitalized Islamic Bank, Citi Islamic Investment Bank (CIIB). CIIB’s core business has been the origination, structuring and distribution of Islamic banking transactions in structured trade finance, leasing, project financing, advisory services and sukuk.

Citi has been a leader in the Islamic Finance business for more than 20 years and has successfully arranged Islamic transactions for issuers in Europe, Asia, LATAM, Africa and the Middle East. In the past 5 years, we have completed more than US$7.0 billion worth of Islamic transactions. Citi Islamic Investment Bank also houses one of the largest 'Murabaha' treasuries, providing investors with Islamically acceptable liquidity management products.

CIIB has its own Shari’a board, comprising world-renowned Islamic scholars who approve the structures of transactions and documentation, ensuring widespread investor acceptability. We are the #1 lead arranger of Islamic loans, Bonds and Credit Derivatives.
