Dear Citi® Commercial Card Client,
In order to provide our clients the latest in card security and help combat fraud, Citi has begun the process to convert Magnetic Stripe cards to Chip and PIN cards by October 2015. This letter is to provide notification of Citi’s communication strategy to cardholders and plan for deactivation of magnetic strip cards.
Chip and PIN cards ensure more secure transactions by validating both the card and cardholder. The embedded microchip will make the card extremely difficult to counterfeit. No personal information about the account or the cardholder is stored on the microchip. The cards can be more readily used in regions where Chip and PIN technology is already dominant. Based on your organization’s Chip and PIN migration schedule, your cardholders have either already received, or will soon receive, their new Chip and PIN cards. To ensure that cardholders are using their new Chip and PIN cards, we will be sending out reminder notifications to cardholders to activate.
All cardholders, regardless of when they received their Chip and PIN cards this year, will receive a notification at least 60 days from card issuance to activate their new card. The first notification will be sent 60 days prior to the magnetic stripe deactivation. Subsequently, Cardholders will receive a second reminder 30 days later and then a third, and final reminder two weeks prior to deactivation, reminding them to activate their cards before their magnetic strip card is deactivated.
To activate their Chip and PIN cards, cardholders should follow the instructions on the activation sticker located on the face of the card. During activation, cardholders will be prompted to set a four-digit PIN. Please note that once a cardholder activates his/her new Chip and PIN card and selects a PIN, the old magnetic stripe card will be deactivated immediately. For Frequently Asked Questions please visit this page.
Please note:
Some cardholders have activated their new Chip and PIN cards but have not established their PIN. Citi will be reaching out to these cardholders in coming months to encourage them to set a PIN so that they do not experience issues when using cards at Chip and PIN terminals. For clarification, Citi will deactivate the old magnetic cards.
Additionally, cards that have been inactive for the past 18 months will not be issued a new Chip and PIN card as part of the forced reissue process. Cardholders with inactive accounts will receive their Chip and PIN cards when their current magnetic stripe cards naturally expire, and will also receive the 60-, 30- and 15-day activation notifications as describe above.
