European Monetary Union, Eurocurrency
To date, the single European currency has been adopted by 13 member states of the European Union: Germany, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, Luxembourg, Austria, Netherlands, Portugal, France, Italy, Finland, Greece and Slovenia.
There are seven types of notes in the following denominations: 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 euro, plus eight types of euro-coins in the denominations of: 2 and 1 euro and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
The symbol of euro € was inspired by the initial letter in the Greek alphabet used in the word “Europe”.
The adoption of the euro is subject to compliance with the Maastricht convergence criteria of 1991.
