Zubyr joined Citi Pakistan as a Management Associate and has held a number of senior positions before taking over as CCO and MD for Pakistan:

• 1972- 1983: Pakistan: Branch Manager, Karachi and Lahore. Was also Head of Treasury, Corporate Banking and Financial Institutions

• 1983- 1987: Jordan CCO with additional responsibility for Iraq and Syria

• 1987 -1989: SAMBA Head of Contracting Division (appointed SCO in 1/89)

• 1989 – 1992: Turkey Chief Executive SAMBA

• 1992 – 1997: London Initially Head for Middle East, Africa (UK); later for Emerging Markets (UK) for Citibank’s Private Banking business; also Global Market Manager for Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan

In 1997, Zubyr took a leave of absence from Citibank to move back to Pakistan as President & Chairman of United Bank Limited (wholly owned by the Government of Pakistan). Over 2½ years the bank was substantially restructured and restored to profitability and is now privatized. He re joined Citi in February 2000 and has spent the last 7 years managing Pakistan operations as Citigroup Country Officer and Managing Director. In December 2005 Zubyr was awarded the Quaid-e-Azam Centenary Gold Medal by the State Bank of Pakistan in recognition for his work in the successful privatization of United Bank Limited as well as his role in financial sector reform where, as Chairman of the Pakistan Banks Association, he was actively involved in initiating major regulatory changes. This particular accolade was last awarded in 1981.

Zubyr is regularly invited to speak on bank restructuring & financial sector reforms at international forums hosted by the World Bank, IMF and IFC. He completed his tenure as President of the American Business Council in December 2006 and has recently taken over as President of the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce & Industry, an organization that represents all foreign investors in Pakistan. He is also a member of the Policy Board of the Securities Exchange Commission of Pakistan, National Education Management Foundation, and a trustee of local NGO Indus Earth.

Zubyr is married with 3 children. His interests include photography, travel, reading and financial education projects.
