Citi Employees Volunteer Hearts & Hands at Karachi School

Citi volunteers—employees, family members, and friends—arrive at The Citizens Foundation Primary School in Machar (“Mosquito”) Colony. The neighborhood is home to 700,000 people and is one of the city’s most deprived areas in terms of housing, hygiene, medical care, and overall living conditions. It is also home to three primary schools—beacons of hope and education for 700 children—run by The Citizens Foundation (TCF).

Employees also volunteered personal funds in excess of Rs. 10 million to The Citizen’s Foundation (TCF) for construction of a primary school in Mansehra District one of the worst hit regions by the earthquake, in Northern Pakistan. The school will be located in the village of Mangla and will have the capacity to provide free education to 180 children.

Citi Volunteers including existing and ex employees contributed over PKR 10 million (US$ 166,000) towards the construction of an Oncology Day Care unit at the AKUH in Karachi. A specially designed facility for patients suffering from various blood and cancer conditions, the Day Care unit offers various diagnostic and therapeutic modalities including blood transfusions for patients with thalassemia, other types of blood component infusional therapy, and outpatient cancer chemotherapy for all types of malignant diseases. The building walls have been inscribed with the names of all those Citi volunteers who so generously donated funds to make this unit possible.

Fatimid Blood Drive

In line with its objective to inculcate a spirit of volunteerism amongst its staff, Citigroup, in liaison with Fatimid Foundation organized a blood camp at its Head Office in Karachi. More than 65 volunteers donated generously towards this noble cause. The blood donated will be used to treat adults and children suffering from ‘Thalassaemia’ and ‘Haemophilia’, blood disorders that require frequent transfusions. Dr. Saghir A. Shaikh, director at Fatimid said “It is overwhelming to see this kind of voluntary support_ we were contacted by Citigroup to arrange this, ordinarily it is the other way round. My congratulations to Citigroup on encouraging community service and that too on company time”

SOS Cricket Match

In line with its efforts to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism and promote diversity amongst its employees, Citigroup organized a cricket match, with the children of the SOS Village on Friday 30 March 2007. The match was played at the ground of the SOS Village itself, where the SOS team won. The winning team and the man of the match were given trophies and certificates.SOS director/caretaker Mrs Hashmi said, “We are very thankful to Citigroup for regularly organizing such events in collaboration with the SOS village. These occasions not only provide our children with respite from their daily routines, but also give them the opportunity to interact with a spectrum of people from diverse backgrounds, thereby enhancing their exposure to the outside world”.
