As a company with a worldwide presence, Citigroup has been in the forefront of efforts to help victims in the communities where we live and work. In little more than a year, Citi, the Citi Foundation, and Citi employees committed to give nearly $31 million dollars for relief and re-building around the world for victims of the tsunami, hurricanes Katrina, Stan, and Wilma, and the South Asia earthquake.

Pakistan Earthquake Reconstruction Project

In 2006, Citi provided a grant of US$ 1.9 million to the American Red Cross (ARC) National Headquarters for its Pakistan Earthquake Reconstruction Project. ARC in partnership with Citi will focus on five communities in the Mansehra District. The project will support the rebuilding of two Basic Health Units (BHUs), one Rural Health Center (RHC), two vocational/community centers, and support their operating costs for one year. The project will assist an estimated 128,000 people per year who have been affected by the earthquake.

Citi Earthquake Relief Contribution

Citi contributed over US$7 million by way of earthquake relief after the October 8 2005 earthquake struck Pakistan’s northern areas. In line with Citi’s traditional spirit of philanthropy, t he Citi Foundation announced a package to assist in the disaster relief efforts in Pakistan and other parts of South Asia. The package, which apart from contributing $1 million directly, also matched dollar for dollar, any employee donation, up to a further $1 million.

Citi's immediate steps demonstrated to the local market the institution's clear focus on positively and meaningfully contributing to the community it operates in.

Kashf Foundation

In line with its objective to support microfinance, Citi Foundation extended a grant of PKR 2.4 million or US$ 40,000 to the Lahore-based Kashf Foundation, a microfinance institution catering specifically to the credit needs of underprivileged women. The grant will used to promote Kashf Foundation’s individual lending product “Business Sarmaya Loan” introduced to meet the fixed asset and running finance requirements of microentrepreneurs and represents a key diversification in Kashf’s credit offerings to the poor

Aga Khan Foundation USA

Citi Foundation extended a multi year grant of PKR 16.8 million (US$280,000) payable over 4 years from 2002 to 2005 as support for the Aga Khan Foundation’s Urban Credit and Health Program, with the main goal being to achieve sustainable improvements in health status amongst women of childbearing age and children in Karachi’s more underprivileged slum areas.

Lahore University of Management Sciences

In line with its objective to facilitate development of the local financial sector, Citi Foundation extended a multi-year grant of PKR 12 million (US$ 200,000) to Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS). Payable over 4 years from 2003-2006, the grant supports LUMS’ efforts at knowledge creation, information dissemination and capacity building in this area. Details >>
