Citi Foundation & the Financial Times Announce Launch of Microentrepreneurship Awareness Campaign

“There’s Nothing Micro About It”
New York, NY – The Citi Foundation and the Financial Times announced today the launch of “There’s Nothing Micro About It,” a unique microentrepreneurship awareness campaign, which coincides with the Clinton Global Initiative’s 2007 Mid-Year Meeting. The launch of this unique collaborative effort grew out of both organizations’ commitments to microfinance and poverty alleviation made at the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative.

The campaign comprises a series of print ads that will run in the Financial Times throughout the year, starting with a full-page ad today, and the launch of a new website (citimicroawards.com/FT), dedicated to microentrepreneurship. The site will highlight the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards, which took place in more than 20 countries on five continents, last year’s award winners, and will offer links to general news and information about microfinance activities around the world.

In launching the campaign, Ajay Banga, Chairman and CEO of Citi’s Global Consumer Group International, said, “We are extremely pleased to work with the Financial Times to raise awareness of microfinance and its power to build prosperity in local economies around the world. By highlighting the efforts of hundreds of extraordinary Citi Microentrepreneur Award winners, we hope to inspire others to recognize that the power to make a difference is in our hands.”

Robin Johnson, President-Americas, the Financial Times, concurred, “This is a very special project for us at the Financial Times. We are committed to supporting microfinance which is recognized as an effective poverty alleviation tool in developing economies around the world. And we are particularly pleased to have the opportunity to sponsor the awareness campaign for the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards, to encourage microentrepreneurship on a global basis, and to raise awareness of the microfinance industry overall.”

Pam Flaherty, President and CEO, Citi Foundation, added, “We are deeply committed to the field of microfinance, and have contributed nearly $40 million to more than 200 microfinance organizations over the past seven years. Through our funding we seek to help microfinance institutions provide hard working microentrepreneurs around the world with greater access to economic opportunities and the tools they need to achieve success.”
