Citigroup Volunteers Support Global Community Day Festivals in Karachi & Lahore

Citigroup’s Inaugural “Global Community Day”

20,000 volunteers in 100 countries participated in 700 projects on the same day.

Citigroup employees joined together in volunteer service to celebrate the first Global Community Day on Saturday, 18 th November 2006. Employees from 100 countries and 300 cities participated in volunteer events across the world.

Within the 52 countries in which Citigroup operate in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), more than 10,000 employees, along with friends and families, took part in 80 volunteer community projects addressing specific local community needs.

In Pakistan, which is part of EMEA, more than 400 Citigroup employees voluntarily forfeited their Saturday off to organize and participate in fun festivals arranged for children of the SOS Village in Karachi and young cancer patients at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Lahore. Both initiatives facilitated maximum interaction between Citigroup volunteers and the nearly 1400 children for whom these events were arranged.

Imran Khan, Chairman Board of Governors of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust said at the Lahore event “volunteering time is an act of true selflessness especially in today’s hectic working environment; it is heartening to see Citigroup employees being so generous with their free time, and moreover we really appreciate the positive impact this day has had on our young patients”

Zahida Hashmi Director SOS Village Sindh who accompanied the 200 children of SOS to the Karachi fair said “Kudos to Citigroup and its team for arranging this day; We are overwhelmed by their enthusiasm to sign up for SOS’s regular volunteer programs and by their generosity in making nearly 100 educational endowments”

Citigroup employees volunteer year-round in the communities in which they live and work. “Global Community Day” is a new effort to have Citigroup’s volunteers come together as a global team on a single day each year.
