Starting today Hungarian drivers can make their household spending go further. Every time they use the new Shell MasterCard from Citibank, they are rewarded in the form of rebates for future Shell purchases. This rebate product offers all the benefits of a Citibank credit card including security and flexible payments with the best rebate program of its kind in the retail fuel industry in Hungary.
To encourage customer applications, Shell and Citibank are doubling the card's regular 3 percent rebate on Shell fuel purchases in Hungary and 1 percent rebate on all other purchases as part of an introductory promotion. The introductory program applies for all cards issued before January 31, 2007 and it refers to transactions made within the first 60 days of the card's issuing date. New cardholders will therefore receive a 6 percent rebate on each Shell fuel purchase in Hungary, that is up to HUF18* for each liter and 2 percent rebate on all other purchases at any outlet in the world accepting MasterCard. Based on the above example, a cardholder can get HUF 2,160 back if he fills up a 40-liter tank three times a month (in case of HUF300/l fuel). If he uses the card to spend HUF 50,000 for other non-fuel purchases in the same month, he gets another rebate of HUF 1,000. The customer can thus save HUF 3,160 in total per month during the introductory promotion, which will be credited towards purchases at domestic Shell stations in the following month.**
After the 60-day period, the rebate reverts back to the industry-leading 3 percent on Shell fuel purchases in Hungary and 1 percent on all other retail purchases wherever the card is used in the country and abroad. Supplementary cards are also included in the rebate program, however, rebates may only be redeemed by the main cardholders.***

As Zdenek Houser, MasterCard Europe General Manager for Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia noted: "We have seen gradually increasing market demand for co-brand cards. Looking at the European figures there has been a spectacular, double digit growth in this market (13,5%) in 2005. While in the same period the number of Hungarian co-brand cards - increasing at a double rate - grew by 29% . As a result of the dynamic growth by the end of second quarter 2006 number of co-brand cards in Hungary exceeded 1 million for the first time.
"It is very important to note that co-branding partners coming from the travel-auto-petrol sector are very popular among card holders. According to data of 1st quarter 2006 travel related partners in Europe cooperated in 18% of all co-brand programs. This means that out of 15 million European co-brand cards 2,7 million plastics were issued in cooperation with car manufacturers, oil companies or travel firms by the end of 1st quarter 2006.
"These numbers clearly show that the Shell MasterCard from Citibank program, which is the best rebate program of its kind in the retail fuel industry in Hungary, is a timely example of the smooth cooperation of co-branding partners leading to the greater satisfaction of customers."
