Environment

As a global business we believe it is our duty to promote sustainable development both within our own organization and in our relationship with our corporate clients.
Around the world
In 2007 Citi made a commitment to invest $50 billion in tackling climate change. Since then, $36.48 billion has been invested in internal projects to improve the operations of the organization, and in alternative forms of energy, clean technology, ‘green’ buildings and research into cutting greenhouse gas emissions by Citi clients.

In 2011 we exceeded the target we had set in 2005 for a 10% reduction in emissions, achieving a reduction of 13.6%. The next objective is a 25% reduction by 2015.

We attach great importance to raising our employees’ awareness of environmental issues. Recently 9,000 Citi employees from around the world took part in a Green Survey, giving their views on the organization’s environmental actions and offering ideas for improving its work in this area.
In Greece
The key elements in Citi’s environmental policy are cutting energy consumption, reducing waste and raising employee awareness.

Energy and Water
Consumption of energy was cut by 11% in 2012, compared with 2011, falling to 7,327,000 KWh, while water consumption was reduced by 3.6%.

Recycling system
In 2012 we doubled the quantity of aluminium recycled, and increased recycling of plastic by 50%. At the same time we were able to cut consumption of plastic bottles by 31.54%, by installing water filters. Specifically, recycling totals were as follows:

Raising employee awareness
The Green Team, set up to manage recycling systems and reduce our energy footprint, has continued its good work, recruiting employees interested in the environment who act as ‘ambassadors’, disseminating environmental news throughout the Bank.

We have also continued to inform employees about environmental issues through features in the Bank’s internal newsletters and other literature.

Finally, Citi has been involved in all the organization’s international green actions, through international education and information initiatives such as the WWF Earth Hour and Citi’s own annual Environment Week.
