What is Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode?
Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode (depends on your card type) ensures that you can make safe online payments at participating internet shops with your Citibank credit card. An extra personal password protects you against fraudulent online use of your activated Citibank credit card.

How do I activate my Citibank credit card for Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode?
During your first online purchase you will be asked to confirm your identity by answering several safety questions (confidentiality of this information is of course assured through the site’s security) and then be requested to create a personal password. You must use your password wisely and keep it secret.
Once your card has been activated, you will be asked to give your password during future online purchases. The password will confirm that you are the authorized card holder and your payment can be completed. The merchant will not see your password.

Why do I need to provide personal information during the activation?
ONLY while you are shopping online at a participating merchant will you be asked to provide personal information by Verified by Visa or MasterCard SecureCode. The personal information you provide (name, zip code, date of birth) are compared to the information we have of you, so that we can be sure that you are the authorized card holder. For extra security, we ask you to give the expiration date of your Citibank credit card and the security code (CVV2) at the back of your card. With this, we verify whether you are actually in possession of the card that is being activated.

Can my personal information be used without my permission?
Definitely not. Your information is only used in accordance with Visa / MasterCard and Citibank’s privacy policy.

How does Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode protect me?
You create a personal password that only you know. By giving the correct password during an online payment, you confirm that you are the authorized card holder and your payment can be completed.

Does the service file cookies on my computer?
No, the service only uses ‘session cookies’, which are filed on your computer temporarily and are automatically deleted when you log out or interrupt the connection.

How does Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode work?
You must first activate your card for this service. If you then want to make an online payment at a participating online merchant, you will be asked for your password. After you have entered your password correctly, Citibank will send an authorization to the merchant and your transaction will be completed. This process is fully protected and invisible to the online merchant.

  • In the event of a correct password, Citibank will confirm online that you are the authorized card holder and your payment will be completed.
  • If you enter your password incorrectly several times, or should your Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode access get locked you will have to identify yourself again and create a new password.

How do I use my password?
When you want to pay for a purchase made at a participating online merchant with your Citibank credit card, a window will appear asking for your password. After you have checked the information of your purchase and after you have verified that your Personal Message is correct, simply insert your password to complete the purchase.

How does the online merchant know whether my password is correct?
The online merchant checks your password electronically at Visa / MasterCard and Citibank during each purchase. This is done after you have stated the number of your Citibank credit card on the purchase form. If you then insert the correct password, Citibank will automatically send an authorization to the internet shop and your payment will be completed. This process is fully protected and invisible to merchant.

What is the Personal Message?
The Personal Message is a message you need to provide when creating your password. A window will appear asking you to give your password during each online purchase. This window will also show your Personal Message. The Personal Message is your guarantee that you are communicating with Citibank and only Citibank passes on your password.
If the Personal Message in the pop-up window is incorrect, then do not give your password, but report it to Citiphone at 210 929 0100.

How can I change my Personal Message?
Click on ‘forgotten password?’ in the window that asks for your password. This option enables you to insert a new Personal Message (after you have reconfirmed your identity).

What must I do if no Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode window appears in the event of an online payment?
You can do the following:

  • Check whether the online merchant is a participant of Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode.
  • Check whether your system blocks pop-ups. If necessary, switch off the software that blocks pop-ups.

Can I get an overview of the transactions I have made with Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode?
Via Citibank Online or your monthly statement you can view all your credit card transactions.

How can I be sure that my credit card number is not misused?
Your online payments at participating online merchants are secured through Verified by Visa / MasterCard SecureCode. With your personal password, you confirm that you are the rightful cardholder and your payment will go through. This process is secured and invisible for the merchant.
