Citibank - a bank with history and tradition
Citibank boasts a successful history of more than 200 years. The bank operates in more than a hundred countries worldwide and services 200 million private and corporate clients. Citibank has been offering its services in the Czech Republic since 1991.

Citi operates in the Czech Republic through Citibank Europe plc, organizační složka. Since 1991, we have offered a full range of banking products and services to a broad spectrum of customers - from personal banking for individuals, including a wide range of credit cards to the Citigold programme for wealthy clients, and corporate banking for small and medium-sized enterprises and large global companies.
Citi in the Czech Republic - 20 years on the Czech market
Citi has been present on the Czech market since 1991. Citi was thus one of the first foreign banks in the Czech Republic (at that time still Czechoslovakia). In the early years, the bank focused primarily on banking services for global corporations, major local companies, and financial institutions. Citi quickly became a market leader in corporate banking and gradually widened its product and service offering to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Citibank entered the retail banking market in 2001 and since then has provided its clients with a range of banking products and services, such as personal accounts, credit cards, options to invest in mutual funds, and the Citigold private banking service.
History of Citi in the Czech Republic
  • 2011 - With the new 3D Secure service, Citibank has improved the security of its clients’ online transactions, and was the first bank on the Czech market to issue cards utilizing this technology. Citibank introduced the Citi Global Transfer service, which enables clients to make electronic payments between Citibank banking accounts worldwide without any time delay.
  • 2011 - Citibank issued a contactless card – the credit Shell MasterCard from Citibank, and was once again the first bank to do so on the Czech market. The first mobile phone payment was performed in the Czech Republic. Using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, almost 400 Citibank and Komerční banka clients are able to try out mobile phone payments in Globus hypermarkets in this pilot project.
  • 2011 - Citibank introduces mobile banking for corporate clients, who will be able to authorize payments through their cell phones and receive SMS notification. Citibank launches mobile banking. Our clients can manage their personal finances from an application on their smartphone. Citibank is the first bank on the Czech market to offer this application on the Android and iPhone mobile operating systems.
  • 2011 - Citibank introduces special stickers with the contactless technology. Clients can place them wherever they need (e.g., on their cell phone or wallet) and use them exactly as they would use their contactless cards.
  • 2010 - Citibank relocates its headquarters to Nové Butovice, Prague 5. A new Wealth Management Centre for clients is opened there
  • 2010 - Citi begins offering a new service called International Personal Bank - helping Czech clients diversify their international portfolios.
  • 2009 - Citibank launches new, optional insurance for credit cards called "Secure Card Insurance". The insurance covers the risk of fraudulent credit card use after theft or loss of the card, including online and PIN transactions, as well as forced cash withdrawals from ATMs using the credit card under threat of physical violence.
  • 2008 - A new client service centre opens in Brno, extending our capacity in telephone banking and debt recovery.
  • 2008 - Citibank a.s. transforms from a daughter company fully owned by U.S.-based Citibank Overseas Investment Corporation to a branch of the Citibank Europe plc joint-stock company registered in Ireland. The name of the company is changed to "Citibank Europe plc, organizační složka".
  • 2007 - The attractive Citigold Centre, for our most important clients, opens in the heart of Prague.
  • 2007 - The best Internet bank for corporate clients. In 2007, Citibank was named the “Best Internet Bank” for corporate clients in the Czech Republic by Global Finance magazine. Citibank has continued to win this award ever since.
  • 2006 - Citibank credit cards reap awards. The Shell MasterCard credit card from Citibank was named the “Best Financial Product of the Year” in 2006 by Osobní finance magazine. The card was also awarded by MasterCard as the “Best Co-Branded Card from the Client’s Benefits Point of View”. In the same year, MasterCard praised the Citi ČSA credit card, which it named the “Best New Product of the Year”.
  • 2005 - Citibank opened its first branch in the Liberec region. The branch includes the first specialized service centre for small and medium-sized companies.
  • 2004 - Thanks to the new WorldLink service, Citibank clients can perform transactions in over one hundred of currencies.
  • 2003 - Citibank services cover a comprehensive range of banking products and services for the widest range of customers, from large companies to small and medium-sized enterprises and individuals. In 2003, the bank has 700 employees working in seven branches and sales points. In addition, Citibank a.s. uses a unique distribution system - a network of sales representatives. Thanks also to high quality online banking and 24/7 CitiPhone service, Citibank a.s. operates all across the Czech Republic.
  • 2003 - Citibank offers a dedicated payment card for small and medium-sized enterprises. In 2003, Citibank introduced a unique product for small and medium-sized enterprises in cooperation with VISA International – the VISA Business Electron international debit card. A competitor to this card has yet to emerge on the Czech market.
  • 2001 - Citibank begins offering personal banking products and services of personal banking. The bank enters this highly competitive market offering accounts, credit cards, personal loans, and mutual funds. Since the beginning, Citibank, a.s. has stressed the use of modern direct banking tools - telephone and online banking.
  • 2001 - Citibank made foreign exchange deals available to its clients through the FXLink online platform.
  • 1999 - Under the CitiBusiness brand, Citibank is the very first bank on the Czech market to offer specialised services for the small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) segment.
  • 1998 - Annual trade volume stabilises at approximately CZK 40 billion and Citibank opens two new branches, in Plzeň and Pardubice.
  • 1997 - The growth of Citibank and the increasing number of local clients result in the opening of the first two branches outside Prague, in Ostrava and Brno. In this year, the bank also begins offering derivative products.
  • 1996 - The CitiLeasing, s.r.o. sister company is founded, providing leasing services for its clients.
  • 1995 - Citibank's business activities grow faster as more clients join the bank, and total trading volume exceeds CZK 25 billion.
  • 1995 - In 1995, Citibank was named “Best Foreign Bank in the Czech Republic” for the first time. The bank went on to receive this Euromoney magazine award for the subsequent three years as well.
  • 1994 - Citibank becomes a depository and custodian of securities. In 1994, Citibank introduced Custody Services so it could serve as a depository and custodian of securities for international investors. The portfolio of loans that Citibank granted to domestic companies this year was the largest among all foreign banks operating on the Czech market.
  • 1993 - The total annual volume of all Citibank a.s. trades exceeds CZK 10 billion.
  • 1993 - At the beginning of 1993, Citibank became a member and shareholder of the Prague Stock Exchange.
  • 1992 - Citibank introduces Internet banking for corporate clients. The account is serviced through the MS DOS operational system.
  • 1991 - Citibank a.s. begins operating in Czechoslovakia. When it launched operations on this market, Citibank focused on banking services for global corporations, major local companies, and financial institutions. Thanks to the services it provides, the bank gained an important position in several product areas including treasury, cash management, custody, and loan products.
